Job Description:



Under supervision, to process and check timecards and payroll data to ensure the correct payment of employees; to perform in a variety of complex clerical and technical tasks related to the issuance of payroll and maintenance of payroll records and reports; to assist in resolving a variety of problems impacting payroll system; to do other work as required.


This single position class typically works without close supervision and within a framework of established procedures and are expected to perform with only occasional instructions or assistance. Incumbent may have frequent contact with other facility's departments, which requires him/her to have knowledge of the policies related to the operation of the Payroll Unit.


Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be:


Completion of high school or equivalent. Coursework from a recognized college in Accounting, Business Administration, or a closely related field may substitute for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of 18 semester or 27 quarter units for one year of experience.

Two years of experience in posting, adjusting, balancing and auditing attendance reports and posting and balancing registers.


Knowledge of:

Principles of modern office methods and record-keeping systems.

Basic principles and practices used in payroll and accounting.

State and federal regulations and laws pertaining to payroll taxes.

The Corporate's regulations related to the calculation of salaries and disbursement of the payroll; the principles, practices and procedures used in preparing the Corporate's payroll.

Computer programs such as Excel, Word Perfect.

The uses of computerized systems for reporting, recording, and processing the payroll.

Fundamentals of key-disk data entry systems.

AS 400 terminal use and operation.

Ability to:

Effectively communicate both orally and in writing to individuals and groups.

Coordinate and maintain payroll records.

Establish priorities, and plan and organize duties to meet changing workload deadlines.

Assist to assess and evaluate problems impacting on the payroll system; assist to recommend and implement effective courses of action.

Communicate effectively with employees at various organizational levels; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.

Write statistical and narrative reports and correspondence.

Obtain and record accurate information
