Summary Description
Patrols, either in a vehicle or on foot, an assigned area during an
assigned shift and looks for indicators of possible criminal
activity or threats to life and property; answers calls for police
services; enforces City, County, and State laws; makes field
contacts and completes forms; may conduct both preliminary and
follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries,
thefts, robberies, vehicle accidents, suspected homicides, and
other criminal incidents.
Makes arrests as necessary; serves warrants; interviews victims,
complaints, and witnesses; interrogates suspects; gathers and
preserves evidence; receives, searches, and books prisoners;
fingerprints and transports prisoners; testifies and presents
evidence in court.
Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in
matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the
apprehension of offenders.
Writes reports and field notes; participates in staff development;
attends briefings and training sessions; performs routine
maintenance on assigned patrol vehicle, firearms, and other
equipment.
Makes traffic stops and issues warnings, citations, or makes
arrests as necessary; checks vehicles and observes vehicle
occupants; investigates scenes of vehicle accidents, provides
emergency medical care as necessary, directs traffic and arranges
for clearing of roadway, interviews drivers and witnesses and
prepares reports; directs traffic at fire, special events, and
other emergency or congested situations.
Assists the public and answers questions; administers first aid and
responds to call for medical assistance; establishes and maintains
a good relationship with the general public.
May participate in or be assigned to special programs such as crime
prevention, investigations, or school resource programs as a
rotating assignment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education:

Certificates/License:
-- --- - California Basic POST Certificate.-- -
-- --- - Must possess and maintain a valid California driver
license and satisfactory driving record.
Special Requirements:
-- --- - Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend and
holiday shifts.-- -
-- --- - Must be twenty (20) years old-- -by the final filing--
-date and twenty-one (21)-- -by the time of appointment.
-- --- - Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent
resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for
citizenship.
Other requirements:
-- --- - Uncorrected vision of 20/100 or better in both eyes and
must be corrected to 20/20 in one eye, 20/30 in the other eye.
Normal color vision.
-- --- - Hearing capabilities must be within normal range.
-- --- - Ability to work under physical and mental pressures and in
potentially hazardous situations.
-- --- - Ability to perform the essential job functions associated
with law enforcement, i.e. run after fleeing suspects, accurately
use and qualify with issued equipment including firearms and
batons, drive a police vehicle for extended periods of time, have
the strength and ability to defend against attacking suspects, take
physical control of violent suspects, move, drag or carry persons

Academy Enrolled
To qualify as an Academy Enrolled the candidate must meet the
following criteria:
-- --- - Currently enrolled in a certified California POST
Academy.

letter from a California POST Academy indicating good standing in
the class and estimated graduation date.
Academy Graduates
To qualify as an Academy Graduate the-- -candidate must meet the
following criteria:
-- --- - Completion of a California-- -Basic P.O.S.T. Academy
within past three (3) years of date of application.
-- --- - Successful completion of a California Basic P.O.S.T
Academy re-certification program within the last three (3) years.--

The following is a summary of the provided benefits to full-time
employees in the Hemet Police Officers unit. For further
information, please refer to the Hemet Police Officers Association
MOU.
Retirement: The City contracts with the California Public Employees
Retirement System (CalPERS).
-- --- - Classic Members: 3% at 55 Formula;-- -1959 survivor
benefit; final compensation based on single highest year; employee
contributes 12% (no Social Security deduction).
-- --- - PEPRA-- -(New) Members: 2.7% at 57 Formula; 1959 survivor
benefit; final compensation based on a three-year average; employee
contributes 50% of total normal cost, currently 14% (no Social
Security deduction).
Medical Coverage:
-- --- - The City contributes $1,100.00-- -per month toward medical
insurance for employees and their eligible dependents.
Dental & Vision Coverage:
-- --- - The City pays 100% of the premium for dental & vision
coverage for employees and their dependents.
Life & Long-Term Disability Insurance:
-- --- - The City pays 100% of the premium for a term-life
insurance policy of $50,000.
-- --- - The City pays 100% of the premium for long-term disability
insurance.
Educational Reimbursement:
-- --- - The City will provide up to $2,000 per calendar year,
subject to terms set forth in the Hemet Police Officers Association
MOU.
Leave Accruals:
-- --- - Employees earn up to the following amounts of leave:
-- --- - 96 vacation hours per year within the first three years of
service
-- --- - 8-- -hours per month Sick Leave
-- --- - 12 paid holidays per year
Bilingual Pay:
-- --- - The City will provide $255.00 per month for eligible
assignments based on the City--------s needs for bilingual skill
and successful completion of a test.
Special Compensation:
-- --- - K-9 Officer Pay: assigned officers will receive seven (7)
hours of overtime pay per pay period.
-- --- - Patrol/SRO: assigned officers will receive an additional
2% base salary increase.
-- --- - Field Training Officers: assigned officers will receive an
additional 10% base salary increase.
-- --- - Mandatory Stand-by/On-call: assigned officers will receive
$125 per pay period.
Uniform Allowance:
-- --- - The City will provide a uniform allowance in the amount of
$1,345 per year.
Educational Incentive Pay:
-- --- - The City will provide 3% above base pay for officers
presently holding a POST Intermediate Certificate or a Bachelor's
degree.
-- --- - The City will provide an additional 5% above base pay for
officers presently holding a POST Advanced Certification or a
Master's degree.
-- --- - Maximum 8% combined incentive.
