position of Police Cadet. -- -
Summary Description
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Police Cadet is a non-sworn class, part-time position
responsible for performing non- emergency and non-hazardous
civilian law enforcement duties. Cadets will be provided with the
opportunity to pursue a law enforcement career by applying for a
sworn or civilian position. Incumbents may be appointed to Police
Trainee to attend the police academy with a formal training program
or they may be given the opportunity to pursue a civilian position
such as; Dispatcher, Community Services Officer, Property and
Evidence Technician, Public Safety Office Specialist, or Crime
Scene Technician.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. On a limited basis, takes select police reports from witnesses,
victims, and other involved parties. No suspect contact will be
included.
2. Takes fingerprints of citizens in the station.
3. Assists in traffic control and DUI check points duties when
requested.
4. Assists with crime prevention activities such as neighborhood
and business watch meetings, community groups and traffic safety
presentations.-- -
5. Performs central reception duties by telephone and at the front
counter, acts as courier in the delivery of materials, supplies,
and equipment as directed.
6. Assists in the maintenance of department vehicles and equipment;
transports vehicles or equipment for repair.
7. Aids in the filing and classifying of materials in the Detective
Bureau as requested.
8. Assists with bookings, completes related forms; receives
property and evidence.
9. Works in various divisions within the Police Department.
10. Assist with dispatch call taking duties as needed.
11. Perform clerical duties such as ordering, receiving and
distributing supplies, processing mail, correspondence, and
reports.
12. Perform functions necessary for graffiti removal and correct
other issues related to quality of life and blight.
13. Provides first aid and CPR in case of life-threatening
emergencies.-- -
14. Performs other related duties and responsibilities not
requiring Peace Officer powers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled in
an accredited college. Must be taking a minimum of 6 units per
semester, be in good standing with the college or university, and
maintain a 2.0 GPA or better (documentation from the college is
required).
If the Police Cadet elects to continue towards completion of a
Bachelor--------s Degree, the Police Cadet may continue in the
program until he or she has reached their 24th birthday. If the
Police Cadet, prior to reaching their 24th birthday, fails to
maintain a 2.0 minimum grade point average, discontinues education,
drops below the required minimum number of units, or fails to be
appointed as Police Trainee or Police employee, the Police Cadet
will be released from employment. Police Cadets who earn a
Bachelor--------s Degree before the age of 24, may continue to
remain in the program until their 24th birthday.
Age
Minimum 18 years of age through 24 years of age.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
Supplemental Information
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery
surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping,
squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement
in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both
near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned
equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment and
supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally,
a Police Cadet will be required to work outdoors at times in all
forms of inclement weather conditions. A Police Cadet may use
chemicals and lubricants, which may expose the employee to fumes,
dust, and air contaminants. They may be exposed to mechanical,
electrical, and biological hazards. The nature of the work also
requires the Police Cadet to climb ladders, work at heights over 10
feet, work in confined spaces, use power and noise producing tools
and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, and
work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions. The Police Cadet may be
required to respond to after-hours emergency call-outs.
Selection Process
All properly completed applications will be reviewed and the most
appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in
the selection process. -- -The process may include any combination
of a written exam, oral board interview, and/or skills assessment
to further evaluate job-related qualifications. -- -Candidates who
successfully complete the selection process will be placed on an
eligibility list which will remain valid for a minimum of six
months.
Note: Prospective employees will undergo, and must successfully
pass, a background reference check (including fingerprinting) and a
medical examination. -- -Drug screening may be required.

Retirement: The City contracts with the California Public Employees
Retirement System (CalPERS).
-- --- - Classic Members: 2.5% at 55 Formula; 1959 survivor
benefit;-- -final compensation based on single highest year;
employee contributes 8% (no Social Security deduction).
-- --- - PEPRA-- -(New) Members: 2% at 62 Formula; 1959 survivor
benefit; final compensation based on a three-year average; employee
contributes 50% of total normal cost, currently 7.25% (no Social
Security deduction).
Medical Coverage:
-- --- - The City contributes $1,100.00-- -per month toward medical
insurance for employees and their eligible dependents.
Dental & Vision Coverage:
-- --- - The City pays 100% of the premium for dental & vision
coverage for employees and their dependents.
Life & Long-Term Disability Insurance:
-- --- - The City pays 100% of the premium for a term-life
insurance policy of $50,000.

Deferred Compensation:
